GROBIŅAS NAMSERVISS: UniStream PLC Controls Drinking Water Treatment and Smart City Automation
SIA “GROBIŅAS NAMSERVISS” is an equipment and service lifecycle management company for Smart City projects, such as residential building administration, as well as centralized heating, water supply, and wastewater service provision.
Automation of the Water Deferrization Station for Improved Safety and Remote Monitoring
The previous control and monitoring system of the Grobiņa drinking water deferrization station (ŪAS) was outdated both in terms of operational defects and technological capabilities. The system did not support several useful functions such as remote access from any smart device, SMS notifications in case of emergencies, and comprehensive monitoring of water and air pressure as well as borehole water levels.
Manual control of the filter valve actuators was also not possible, which is necessary for various station tests, repairs, and maintenance.
Main Requirements for the New System
- Modernization of the control and monitoring system
- Use of existing systems – for time and cost efficiency
- Remote system access from any smart device
- SMS notifications in case of emergency
- Remote monitoring of key ŪAS indicators
- Manual control of deferrization valve actuators
In 2019, the project for complete system and facility renovation was initiated. As part of the project, the Grobiņa ŪAS control and monitoring system was replaced with a new, modern solution providing all functions necessary for safe and autonomous water purification and supply.
Renovation also included the electrical supply networks for ŪAS system equipment (deep well pumps, air blower, compressors, valve actuators), including the installation of phase control modules, surge protection modules, and short‑circuit/overload protection devices.
The Most Time‑ and Cost‑Efficient Project
SIA “GROBIŅAS NAMSERVISS” has many years of experience with Unitronics PLC programming and application in monitoring and control systems for Smart City projects—such as water deferrization stations, boiler houses, wastewater pumping stations, and other infrastructure. The Unitronics development tools VisiLogic and UniLogic feature a clear interface, enabling faster creation of PLC logic and visualization.
The new control and monitoring system was built on the Unitronics UniStream series, as these PLCs integrate an HMI panel and support a modular system structure—allowing expansion at any time by adding I/O modules.
With UniStream PLCs, it is easy to develop a detailed, user‑friendly HMI visualization, and thanks to supported communication protocols, connections with other equipment can be established.
The PLCs are compatible with GSM modems for SMS notifications, and VNC Viewer enables remote access from any smart device.
“During this project, Klinkmann ensured fast delivery of the required PLCs and related components, and throughout the entire project provided support on all matters related to Unitronics products,” comments Kārlis Sējējs, Chief Energy Engineer of SIA “GROBIŅAS NAMSERVISS”.
With the new control and monitoring system, all previously identified deficiencies have been eliminated, ensuring automated and high‑quality operation of the Grobiņa ŪAS system—necessary to continue providing residents of Grobiņa with high‑quality drinking water.
