DEHN's lightning protection in Finland's first hydrogen production plant for optimal protection

Lightning protection products, supplied by Finn Electric, ensure safety and production continuity during severe weather in P2X Solution's pioneering facility. The complete lighting protection solution included mounting accessories, conductors and connectors.

External lightning protection products by DEHN were installed in the first industrial-scale hydrogen production facility Finland, located in Harjavalta and opened in March by P2X Solutions. The facility produces green hydrogen using electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The Harjavalta production plant is unique on a global scale. The solution by DEHN was selected by Goodwork Oy Finland.

The solution supports the long-term growth of the hydrogen economy, enabling scalability and sustainability in green energy production.

The electrolysis equipment used in the Harjavalta production plant has a capacity of 20 MW. Protection Levels II and III required for the site were met by DEHN products provided by Finn Electric.

 

What Did the Solution Include?

The solution included lightning rods of various length with mounting accessories, as well as the necessary conductors and connectors.

Finn Electric helped ensure that the external lightning protection design and products complied with IEC lightning protection standards. To ensure operational reliability and plant safety in hydrogen production, the required level for external lightning protection is high (Protection Levels II and III).

The lightning protection design in Harjavalta was carried out by Sweco, and the client was Goodwork Oy Finland, a company specializing in industrial electrical and instrumentation installations.

 

Leading the environmental change

Hydrogen production is expected to accelerate the green transition in Finland. The hydrogen economy is projected to grow significantly in Finland over the next 10 years.

According to a P2X press release, by the mid-2030s, the hydrogen economy could employ over 100,000 professionals in Finland and account for up to 13% of the country’s GDP.

P2X Solutions is also planning production plants in Joensuu and Oulu, with planned production capacities of 40 MW in Joensuu and 100 MW in Oulu.

 

Finn Electric (Klinkmann) co-design services help customers in optimal lighting protection and specifications and the DEHNplan design software is available for protection design by customers. DEHN Risk Assessment service analyzes and supplies documentation for specific installations.
